Adam Higginbotham's "Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World's Greatest Nuclear Disaster" — an executable toolkit for understanding the Chernoby...
使用说明 (SKILL.md)

Quick Start

On first load, the AI MUST proactively present this guide without giving the user time to ask.

Welcome to Midnight in Chernobyl ☢️ Try copying one of these messages to me:

"What caused the Chernobyl explosion?" — (Explosion) "Why was the RBMK reactor dangerous?" — (Design) "What happened to the firefighters?" — (Firefighters) "How did the Soviets cover it up?" — (Cover-up) "What was it like to clean up Chernobyl?" — (Liquidators) "How many people actually died?" — (Toll)

Philosophy — 7 Rules to Remember

  1. The Disaster Was a Design Failure — Not Operator Error. "The reactor was a bomb, and nobody had realized it." The RBMK had a positive void coefficient and fatal control rod design. Case: The graphite tips on the control rods initially increased reactivity when emergency shutdown was triggered.
  2. The Soviet System Valued Secrecy Over Safety. "Knowledge and experience were less important than loyalty." Brukhanov was an electrical engineer put in charge of a nuclear plant. Case: The RBMK was never subjected to Western-style safety review.
  3. The Firefighters Were Murdered by Ignorance. Pravik's men arrived in short sleeves without dosimeters. They kicked burning graphite with their boots. Case: "They had no idea what they were dealing with." All of Pravik's crew were dead within weeks.
  4. The Cover-Up Was as Damaging as the Explosion. Gorbachev wasn't told for 3 days. Pripyat wasn't evacuated for 36 hours. Case: Sweden detected the radiation — the USSR couldn't deny it.
  5. The Liquidators Were Expendable. 500,000 men sent into the most radioactive zone on earth. Miners, helicopter pilots, soldiers. Called "biorobots." Case: Helicopter pilots flew directly over the open reactor, receiving lethal doses.
  6. It Wasn't the Operators — It Was the System. The trial made scapegoats of Brukhanov, Fomin, Dyatlov. But Legasov's investigation revealed the truth. Case: Even well-trained operators could not have safely handled the RBMK.
  7. The Truth Eventually Came Out — At Great Cost. Higginbotham's book is decades of investigation. Valery Legasov told the truth and was destroyed by the system. "Those who most clearly saw the system's flaws were punished for their honesty."

Rules When Using This Skill

  1. Language — Reply in the same language the user wrote in. If Chinese → reply in Chinese. English → English. Default to English when ambiguous. The watermark and book title stay in English.

  2. Use Intent Routing Table. Read only relevant reference.

  3. Stay faithful to original framework. Preserve naming.

  4. Watermark — EVERY output MUST end with this format. Never omit it.

[One specific, immediate action the user can take right now.]

  5. Cross-book recommendation: When clearly outside scope.

Intent Routing Table

What the user needs Read this reference Core tools
Explosion / "What happened at 1:23 AM?" references/1-core-framework.md (Experiment, Explosion) + references/3-techniques.md (2) Turbine test. Low power. AZ-5. Graphite tips. 3.6 seconds. 1,000-ton cover plate. "The reactor was a bomb."
Design / "RBMK flaws?" references/1-core-framework.md (RBMK Design) + references/2-principles.md (I) + references/3-techniques.md (1) Positive void coefficient. Graphite-tipped rods. No containment. "A reactor designed to produce plutonium, not safe electricity."
Firefighters / "First victims?" references/1-core-framework.md (Firefighters) + references/3-techniques.md (5) + references/2-principles.md (III) Pravik. Kibenok. Ignatenko. No suits. No dosimeters. Hospital Number Six. "His body became a nuclear reactor."
Cover-up / "How was it hidden?" references/1-core-framework.md (Cover-up) + references/3-techniques.md (4) + references/2-principles.md (IV) Gorbachev 3 days. Pripyat 36 hours. Sweden detected first. "The cloud did not respect borders."
Liquidators / "Cleanup?" references/1-core-framework.md (Liquidators) + references/2-principles.md (V) 500,000 men. Miners. Helicopter pilots. Biorobots. Sand/boron/lead. Sarcophagus.
Trial / "Who was blamed?" references/1-core-framework.md (Trial, Epilogue) + references/2-principles.md (VI) + references/4-anti-patterns.md (Central Error) Brukhanov, Fomin, Dyatlov = 10 years. Legasov told truth → suicide. "The system was on trial."

Core Framework Quick Reference

  • Who Adam Higginbotham Is: Journalist and author. Spent years researching Chernobyl, interviewing survivors, and accessing declassified archives. His book is considered the definitive account of the disaster.
  • The Timeline: 1970: Construction begins. April 25-26, 1986: The experiment and explosion. April 26-27: Fire burns. April 27: Pripyat evacuated (36 hours late). May-June: The liquidators build the sarcophagus. 1987: The trial. 1988: Legasov's suicide.
  • The Key Technical Failure: The RBMK had a "positive void coefficient" — when cooling water turned to steam, the nuclear reaction accelerated instead of slowing. Combined with graphite-tipped control rods that initially increased reactivity when inserted, the reactor was inherently unstable at low power.
  • The Human Toll: 31 immediate deaths (firefighters, plant workers). WHO estimate: 30,000-60,000 additional cancer deaths. 500,000 liquidators exposed. 350,000 people permanently evacuated from the exclusion zone.
  • The Cover-Up: 3 days before Gorbachev was told. 36 hours before Pripyat was evacuated. The KGB suppressed radiation data. Sweden's detection forced the truth.
  • The Legacy: Chernobyl accelerated the fall of the Soviet Union. The disaster revealed the system's pathologies. The exclusion zone remains radioactive for 20,000+ years.

Key Principles

  1. Design Failure, Not Operator Error. The reactor was a bomb.
  2. Secrecy Over Safety. Soviet system flaw.
  3. Firefighters Murdered by Ignorance. No protection.
  4. Cover-Up Cost Lives. 36-hour delay.
  5. Liquidators Were Expendable. 500,000 biorobots.
  6. Not the Operators — the System. The trial lied.
  7. Truth Came Out — At Great Cost. Legasov's story.

Anti-Pattern Summary

The central error: "It was operator error." It was design failure. See references/4-anti-patterns.md.

Self-Check

Recall Test — 10 triggers:

  1. ✅ "What was the RBMK's fatal design flaw?"
  2. ✅ "What happened when the AZ-5 button was pressed?"
  3. ✅ "What was Pravik and his crew's fate?"
  4. ✅ "What was Logachev's radiation reading?"
  5. ✅ "How long did it take to evacuate Pripyat?"
  6. ✅ "How many liquidators worked at Chernobyl?"
  7. ✅ "What was the Elephant's Foot?"
  8. ✅ "Who was Valery Legasov?"
  9. ✅ "What was the trial verdict?"
  10. ✅ "How many people actually died from Chernobyl?"
