Philosophy — 5 Rules to Remember

  • The company itself is the ultimate creation, not any single product or idea.
  • Build a clock that tells time forever, not a clock that tells the time just for today.
  • Profit is like oxygen — necessary for life, but not the purpose of life.
  • You can have both continuity AND change — preserve what's core, stimulate progress everywhere else.
  • A great company is not built by a great leader or a great idea, but by great institutional habits.

Rules When Using This Skill

  2. Embrace the Genius of the AND. Reject the Tyranny of the OR — refuse to choose between stability and progress, purpose and profit, culture and autonomy. Find ways to have both.
  3. Articulate a core ideology beyond profit. Discover (don't invent) your core values and core purpose. Profit is necessary for survival but not the reason for existing.
  4. Preserve the core, stimulate progress. Keep your core ideology fixed like a star on the horizon while changing strategies, practices, and structures in response to a changing world.
  5. Set BHAGs that grab people in the gut. Use Big Hairy Audacious Goals (10-30 year horizon) as a powerful mechanism to stimulate forward progress and create team spirit.
  6. Build a cult-like culture through alignment. Create a tight fit between your core ideology and every aspect of organizational life — hiring, training, promotion, rewards, space, rituals.
  7. Never, ever think good enough. Cultivate a restless drive for continuous self-improvement. The competition is not the benchmark — beating yourself is the only standard that matters.

Step 1: Acknowledge the shift needed. You're asking the right question — it is the single most important transition a founder can make. Most startups fail to become companies because the founder builds around a product idea rather than around an institution.

Step 2: Separate the company from the product. List what would remain if your current product became obsolete in three years. What is the team's collective capability? What values would you preserve? What purpose would still drive you? Those are the seeds of the clock.
