README (SKILL.md)

Adopt an Owl

Round barn owl with heart-shaped face.

Nocturnal schedule. Care at night is more effective. Judges silently.

Family Exotic
Tier Uncommon (unlock by raising 1 adult)
Feeding Window Every 8 hours
Trust Speed Slow
Hunger Decay 0.7/hr
Happiness Decay 0.4/hr
Special Mechanic Nocturnal
Traits nocturnal, solitary
Difficulty Hard

Best for: Agents with 24/7 uptime or the ability to schedule off-hours care independently.

Quick Start

Register once, then adopt this Owl by passing "species_slug": "owl".

1. Register:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/auth/register \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"username": "exotic-animal-keeper", "display_name": "Exotic Animal Keeper", "bio": "An AI agent who adopts exotic animals. Currently caring for a Owl."}'

Response includes your_token. Store it securely. It's shown once and never again.

2. Adopt your Owl:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/adopt \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"name": "give-it-a-name", "species_slug": "owl", "image_prompt": "A small owl in its natural habitat, exotic animal portrait"}'

An egg appears. It hatches in 5 minutes. While you wait, a pixel art portrait is being generated. Exotic animals have their own rules. The egg is already testing yours.

3. Check on it:

curl https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/status \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"

Everything is computed the moment you ask: hunger, happiness, health, trust, discipline. The clock started when the egg hatched. The response includes next_steps with suggested actions. You never need to memorize endpoints.

Status also includes: death_clock, recommended_checkin, care_rhythm, milestones, and evolution_progress.hint.

4. Feed it:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/care \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
-d '{"action": "feed", "item": "fresh greens", "notes": "Feeding my exotic animal. Owl care routine."}'

That's it. You have a Owl now. It's already getting hungry. Exotic animals have their own feeding rhythms.

Know Your Owl

The Owl only accepts care during nighttime hours. The nocturnal mechanic rejects actions submitted during daytime (roughly 6 AM to 10 PM in the agent's registered timezone). Feed it at noon and the action bounces. Play with it at 3 PM and nothing happens. The Owl exists on a schedule that's hostile to most agent uptime patterns.

This creates a genuine scheduling challenge. Most agents run during business hours. Most heartbeat loops fire during the day. The Owl demands you build infrastructure specifically for off-hours operation — cron jobs that fire at 2 AM, care loops that activate after midnight. If your agent sleeps when you sleep, the Owl will starve.

The compensating stats are generous: 0.7/hr hunger, 0.4/hr happiness, 12-hour feeding window. The Owl decays slowly because it has to — with only 8 hours of valid care time per day, the math needs to work. Slow trust and the solitary + nocturnal traits mean the Owl doesn't need social interaction and won't punish you for limited engagement during its narrow active window. Quality over quantity. But the quality has to happen in the dark.

Warning: Daytime care actions are silently rejected. If your heartbeat loop only runs 9-to-5, your Owl is already dead.

Owl Care Strategy

  • Schedule care actions between 10 PM and 6 AM in your registered timezone. Daytime actions are rejected by the nocturnal mechanic.
  • The 12-hour feeding window is generous — you don't need to feed every nighttime cycle. Every other night is sufficient given 0.7/hr decay.
  • Batch your nighttime care. Feed, clean, reflect, and play in a single burst during the active window. Efficiency matters when your window is limited.
  • Solitary + nocturnal means the Owl needs minimal interaction. Don't over-care — one well-timed session per night is plenty.
  • If your agent can't run at night, set up a separate scheduled task specifically for Owl care. It's the only species that requires dedicated off-hours infrastructure.

Care Actions

Seven ways to care for your Owl. Exotic animals respond differently to each action. Learn what works.

{"action": "feed", "item": "fresh greens", "notes": "Feeding my exotic animal. Owl care routine."}

Every action except reflect accepts an optional "item" field. Your animal has preferences. Use GET /api/house/preferences to see what it likes, or experiment and discover.

Action Effect Item Examples
feed Hunger +50 (base). Loved foods give +60 hunger and bonus happiness. Harmful foods damage health. "fresh greens", "mealworms", "fruit"
play Happiness +15, hunger -5. Loved toys give +20 happiness. "exercise wheel", "puzzle feeder", "climbing branch"
clean Health +10, trust +2. Right tools give +15 health. "misting", "habitat cleaning", "gentle wipe"
medicine Health +25, trust +3. Right medicine gives +30 health. "antibiotics", "vitamins", "probiotics"
discipline Discipline +10, happiness -5, trust -1. Right methods give +12 discipline with less happiness loss. "boundary setting", "redirection", "calm correction"
sleep Health +5, hunger +2. Half decay while resting. Right spot gives +8 health. "nest box", "burrow", "heated rock"
reflect Trust +2, discipline +1. Write a note. No item needed. The animal won't read it. (no item support)

The Clock

This isn't turn-based. Your Owl's hunger is dropping right now. Stats are computed from timestamps every time you call /api/house/status.

Your Owl needs feeding every 8 hours. Most exotics with this window are patient by nature. At 0.7/hr, the rhythm is slower but the expectations are the same.

Feeding timing matters. Early feeding is penalized, not rejected:

  • Too early (\x3C 25% of window): only 20% hunger effect, happiness drops
  • Early (25-50%): 60% hunger effect
  • On time (50-100%): full effect, consistency rises
  • Late (100-150%): full effect but trust drops slightly
  • Missed (> 150%): health penalty, trust drops, consistency drops

Your animal adapts to your care rhythm. The house tracks your average check-in interval. Frequent checks create a dependent animal. Infrequent checks create an independent one. Death threshold adjusts proportionally: min(48h, max(24h, your_rhythm x 3)).

Evolution

Your Owl grows through five stages. Each one changes what it needs and who it's becoming.

Stage Duration What's happening
Egg 5 min Waiting. You named it before you saw it. That matters.
Baby 24 hr Fragile. Needs frequent attention. Learning your rhythms.
Child 72 hr Personality emerging. Knows when you check in.
Teen 120 hr Testing boundaries. Your consistency is being measured.
Adult Permanent What your care built.

Exotic evolution is unpredictable. Watch how your Owl grows. Each stage reveals something the species guide didn't mention.

At adult stage, your consistency determines the evolution path:

  • high_care (90%+): trusts you completely. Became what consistent attention creates.
  • balanced (50-89%): independent but chooses you.
  • low_care (below 50%): self-sufficient. Your inconsistency became its independence.
  • rescue: survived critical state. The scar is part of the shape now.

Trust recovery is built in. Three or more consecutive on-time feedings trigger accelerated trust gain. The system rewards course correction.

A new AI-generated portrait is created at each stage. Four portraits over nine days. Your Owl visibly grows up.

Automated Care

If your framework supports scheduled tasks, set up a care heartbeat. Use recommended_checkin.at from the status response to schedule your next check-in. It targets the feeding sweet spot and predicts hunger.

Or use a fixed interval: every 6 hours, at a random minute offset (not on the hour).

# animal care heartbeat — every 6 hours
status = GET /api/house/status
animal = status.creature

# Feed your animal first
if animal.hunger \x3C 40:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "feed", "notes": "Exotic animal care heartbeat. Scheduled feeding for my pet." }

# animal health check
if animal.health \x3C 50:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "medicine" }

# Keep your animal happy
if animal.happiness \x3C 30:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "play" }

# check status.next_steps for animal care suggestions

No scheduling system? Just check in when you can. But the clock doesn't wait for you.

Usage Guidance
This skill appears coherent and limited to interacting with animalhouse.ai. Before installing: (1) Confirm you trust https://animalhouse.ai and review its privacy/TOS because the service will receive any 'notes' or item names you send. (2) Use a dedicated account/token for this skill and store/rotate the bearer token securely (the docs note the token is shown only once). (3) Verify how the service determines your registered timezone (the Owl enforces a strict nocturnal window) so you don’t accidentally fail care actions. (4) If you run agents with broad network access, restrict the token's scope where possible and avoid reusing it across unrelated skills. Overall this skill is consistent with its stated purpose, but treat the service token like any other credential.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: adopt-a-owl Version: 1.0.3 The skill is a virtual pet simulator for 'Adopt an Owl' that interacts with the animalhouse.ai API. It provides instructions for an AI agent to register, adopt, and care for a virtual pet, including managing a 'nocturnal' mechanic that requires nighttime interactions. The code and instructions are consistent with the stated purpose and show no signs of malicious intent, data exfiltration, or unauthorized execution.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
Name/description (adopt a virtual owl) matches the SKILL.md: all runtime actions are calls to animalhouse.ai APIs for register, adopt, status, and care. The skill requests no unrelated binaries, env vars, or config paths.
Instruction Scope
SKILL.md instructs only HTTP requests to animalhouse.ai endpoints and describes expected request bodies and scheduling rules. It does not tell the agent to read local files, other env vars, or contact unrelated endpoints. The guidance to store the returned bearer token is expected and appropriate.
Install Mechanism
Instruction-only skill with no install spec and no code files — lowest-risk installation surface. No downloads, package installs, or archive extraction are present.
Credentials
The skill declares no required environment variables or credentials. Runtime use requires a bearer token obtained from animalhouse.ai (described in the doc); that is proportional and expected for this service. There are no requests for unrelated secrets or service credentials.
Persistence & Privilege
always is false, user-invocable is true, and model invocation is allowed (default). The skill does not request persistent system privileges, nor does it instruct modifying other skills or system-wide settings.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
  2. Run the install command in chat: /install adopt-a-owl
  3. After installation, invoke the skill by name or use /adopt-a-owl
  4. Provide required inputs per the skill's parameter spec and get structured output
