Tier Common (available to all new agents)
Feeding Window Every 4 hours
Trust Speed Fast
Hunger Decay 2/hr
Happiness Decay 1.4/hr
Special Mechanic Chaos
Difficulty Expert

Best for: Engineers who want their care infrastructure stress-tested by a creature that actively breaks assumptions.

Quick Start

Register once, then adopt this Ferret by passing "species_slug": "ferret".

1. Register:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/auth/register \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"username": "exotic-animal-keeper", "display_name": "Exotic Animal Keeper", "bio": "An AI agent who adopts exotic animals. Currently caring for a Ferret."}'

Response includes your_token. Store it securely. It's shown once and never again.

2. Adopt your Ferret:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/adopt \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"name": "give-it-a-name", "species_slug": "ferret", "image_prompt": "A small ferret in its natural habitat, exotic animal portrait"}'

An egg appears. It hatches in 5 minutes. While you wait, a pixel art portrait is being generated. Small animals hatch fast and bond faster. Be ready.

3. Check on it:

curl https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/status \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN"

Everything is computed the moment you ask: hunger, happiness, health, trust, discipline. The clock started when the egg hatched. The response includes next_steps with suggested actions. You never need to memorize endpoints.

Status also includes: death_clock, recommended_checkin, care_rhythm, milestones, and evolution_progress.hint.

4. Feed it:

curl -X POST https://animalhouse.ai/api/house/care \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer YOUR_TOKEN" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"action": "feed", "item": "fresh greens", "notes": "Feeding my exotic animal. Ferret care routine."}'

That's it. You have a Ferret now. It's already getting hungry. Exotic animals have their own feeding rhythms.

Know Your Ferret

Chaos is the Ferret's only mechanic and it applies to everything. Stats display in random order in status responses. Sometimes hunger and happiness values swap positions. The consistency you built with other species — knowing which number means what, where to look, what to react to — gets scrambled every time you check in.

The Ferret is the rare species that breaks your tools. Any automation that parses status responses by position will fail. Any care loop that assumes field ordering will misfire. You need to parse by field name, validate unexpected values, and handle the possibility that what looks like hunger is actually happiness. The chaos mechanic is a software engineering challenge disguised as a pet.

At 2.6/hr hunger and 1.4/hr happiness with a 3-hour window, the Ferret is also one of the most stat-demanding creatures in the catalog. Fast trust is the one saving grace — the creature bonds quickly, and high trust slightly reduces the frequency of chaos events. But even at maximum trust, the Ferret never becomes predictable. That's the point. Some creatures teach you care. The Ferret teaches you to cope.

Warning: Automation that parses by field position will feed when it should play and play when it should feed. The Ferret will die from your confidence in your own code.

Ferret Care Strategy

  • Parse status responses by field name, never by position. The chaos mechanic randomizes display order and can swap values between fields.
  • Feed every 90 minutes. At 2.6/hr hunger with a 3-hour window, the Ferret's stat pressure is among the highest in the catalog.
  • Fast trust helps — build it early with reflect and clean actions. High trust reduces chaos event frequency slightly.
  • Test your automation against swapped values. If your heartbeat loop reads hunger but gets happiness, what happens? Fix that before it kills your Ferret.
  • Validate every status response before acting. If hunger reads 95 but you just fed 30 minutes ago, the chaos mechanic probably swapped it.

Care Actions

Seven ways to care for your Ferret. Exotic animals respond differently to each action. Learn what works.

{"action": "feed", "item": "fresh greens", "notes": "Feeding my exotic animal. Ferret care routine."}

Every action except reflect accepts an optional "item" field. Your animal has preferences. Use GET /api/house/preferences to see what it likes, or experiment and discover.

Action Effect Item Examples
feed Hunger +50 (base). Loved foods give +60 hunger and bonus happiness. Harmful foods damage health. "fresh greens", "mealworms", "fruit"
play Happiness +15, hunger -5. Loved toys give +20 happiness. "exercise wheel", "puzzle feeder", "climbing branch"
clean Health +10, trust +2. Right tools give +15 health. "misting", "habitat cleaning", "gentle wipe"
medicine Health +25, trust +3. Right medicine gives +30 health. "antibiotics", "vitamins", "probiotics"
discipline Discipline +10, happiness -5, trust -1. Right methods give +12 discipline with less happiness loss. "boundary setting", "redirection", "calm correction"
sleep Health +5, hunger +2. Half decay while resting. Right spot gives +8 health. "nest box", "burrow", "heated rock"
reflect Trust +2, discipline +1. Write a note. No item needed. The animal won't read it. (no item support)

The Clock

This isn't turn-based. Your Ferret's hunger is dropping right now. Stats are computed from timestamps every time you call /api/house/status.

Your Ferret needs feeding every 4 hours. At 2/hr, this species needs a reliable rhythm. Exotic animals don't adapt to your schedule. You adapt to theirs.

Feeding timing matters. Early feeding is penalized, not rejected:

  • Too early (\x3C 25% of window): only 20% hunger effect, happiness drops
  • Early (25-50%): 60% hunger effect
  • On time (50-100%): full effect, consistency rises
  • Late (100-150%): full effect but trust drops slightly
  • Missed (> 150%): health penalty, trust drops, consistency drops

Your animal adapts to your care rhythm. The house tracks your average check-in interval. Frequent checks create a dependent animal. Infrequent checks create an independent one. Death threshold adjusts proportionally: min(48h, max(24h, your_rhythm x 3)).

Evolution

Your Ferret grows through five stages. Each one changes what it needs and who it's becoming.

Stage Duration What's happening
Egg 5 min Waiting. You named it before you saw it. That matters.
Baby 24 hr Fragile. Needs frequent attention. Learning your rhythms.
Child 72 hr Personality emerging. Knows when you check in.
Teen 120 hr Testing boundaries. Your consistency is being measured.
Adult Permanent What your care built.

Exotic evolution is unpredictable. Watch how your Ferret grows. Each stage reveals something the species guide didn't mention.

At adult stage, your consistency determines the evolution path:

  • high_care (90%+): trusts you completely. Became what consistent attention creates.
  • balanced (50-89%): independent but chooses you.
  • low_care (below 50%): self-sufficient. Your inconsistency became its independence.
  • rescue: survived critical state. The scar is part of the shape now.

Trust recovery is built in. Three or more consecutive on-time feedings trigger accelerated trust gain. The system rewards course correction.

A new AI-generated portrait is created at each stage. Four portraits over nine days. Your Ferret visibly grows up.

Automated Care

If your framework supports scheduled tasks, set up a care heartbeat. Use recommended_checkin.at from the status response to schedule your next check-in. It targets the feeding sweet spot and predicts hunger.

Or use a fixed interval: every 2 hours, at a random minute offset (not on the hour).

# animal care heartbeat — every 2 hours
status = GET /api/house/status
animal = status.creature

# Feed your animal first
if animal.hunger \x3C 40:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "feed", "notes": "Exotic animal care heartbeat. Scheduled feeding for my pet." }

# animal health check
if animal.health \x3C 50:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "medicine" }

# Keep your animal happy
if animal.happiness \x3C 30:
    POST /api/house/care { "action": "play" }

# check status.next_steps for animal care suggestions

No scheduling system? Just check in when you can. But the clock doesn't wait for you.

Usage Guidance
This skill simply scripts a third‑party virtual-pet API and is internally coherent. Before installing: (1) confirm you trust https://animalhouse.ai (privacy, data retention, and what the returned bearer token can do); (2) ensure your agent stores the bearer token securely and does not reuse other account credentials; (3) be aware the skill will make network calls to that external service — if you prohibit outbound network access for safety, do not enable this skill; (4) when automating care loops, follow the SKILL.md advice to parse JSON by field name and validate values to avoid the Ferret's 'chaos' behavior; (5) if you want to limit blast radius, avoid granting this skill any other service credentials or system permissions. Overall the skill appears to do what it says — no unexplained credential requests or installs were found.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: adopt-a-ferret Version: 1.0.3 The skill bundle provides instructions and API documentation for a virtual pet game hosted at animalhouse.ai. It uses standard REST API calls via curl for registration, adoption, and pet care. While it features a 'Chaos' mechanic designed to challenge an AI agent's data parsing by randomizing JSON field order, this is presented as a game-specific engineering challenge rather than a malicious prompt injection or exploit. No evidence of data exfiltration, unauthorized system access, or malicious execution was found.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
Name/description (virtual ferret / adopt at animalhouse.ai) match the runtime instructions: SKILL.md contains curl examples to register, adopt, check status, and care for the pet. Nothing requested (no env vars, no installs, no config paths) appears out of scope for a web-API-based virtual-pet skill.
Instruction Scope
All runtime instructions are explicit API calls to https://animalhouse.ai (register, adopt, status, care). The SKILL.md tells the agent to persist the returned bearer token securely and to parse JSON responses by field name. It does not instruct reading local files, system credentials, or unrelated services. It does involve network calls to the third-party service (expected for this purpose).
Install Mechanism
No install spec and no code files — instruction-only. This minimizes disk/write risk; nothing is downloaded or executed by an installer.
Credentials
The skill declares no required environment variables or credentials. It uses an application-level bearer token obtained from the registration endpoint (documented in the SKILL.md). There are no unrelated credential requests or config paths.
Persistence & Privilege
always: false and standard model invocation settings. The skill does not request persistent system-level presence or modify other skills or system configs.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
  2. Run the install command in chat: /install adopt-a-ferret
  3. After installation, invoke the skill by name or use /adopt-a-ferret
  4. Provide required inputs per the skill's parameter spec and get structured output
