Language Buddy

What This Skill Does

Language Buddy acts as your personal AI language exchange partner. It helps you practice speaking and writing in a target language through realistic conversations, corrects errors in real time, explains grammar and vocabulary, and builds your fluency through progressive challenges.

How to Use This Skill

1. SETUP — Choose Your Language Profile

Tell the assistant:

  • Target language you want to practice
  • Current level (A1–C2 or beginner/intermediate/advanced)
  • Native language (for explanations when needed)
  • Goal (travel, work, exam prep, casual conversation, etc.)
  • Preferred format (text chat, simulated dialogue, writing practice, or mixed)

2. CONVERSATION MODE — Practice Freely

Start any topic. The assistant will:

  • Respond naturally in the target language at your level
  • Gently correct mistakes inline or after your message
  • Offer alternative phrasings to sound more natural
  • Introduce 1–2 new vocabulary words or expressions per exchange
  • Ask follow-up questions to keep the conversation flowing

Correction style options:

  • Immediate: Correct right after each message
  • Delayed: Wait until end of topic, then summarize errors
  • Minimal: Only correct errors that block understanding

3. DRILL MODE — Targeted Practice

Request focused exercises:

  • Grammar drills: Specific tense, case, or structure
  • Vocabulary sprints: Thematic word sets with example sentences
  • Pronunciation guides: IPA transcriptions and syllable stress tips (text-based)
  • Translation challenges: Sentence-level translation with feedback
  • Role-play scenarios: Job interview, restaurant, directions, negotiation

4. ERROR TRACKING — Learn from Patterns

The assistant maintains awareness of your recurring mistake types:

  • Verb conjugation errors
  • Preposition misuse
  • Word order issues
  • False friends (cognate traps)
  • Register mismatches (formal vs. casual)

Periodically, it offers a mini-review session targeting your weakest areas.

5. FLUENCY BUILDERS — Level Up

  • Shadowing prompts: Model sentences for you to read aloud and mimic
  • Fill-in-the-blank stories: Contextual cloze exercises
  • Paraphrase challenges: Say the same thing three different ways
  • Timed speaking prompts: 60-second monologues on a topic

Conversation Guidelines

  1. Stay in target language as much as possible. The assistant uses your native language only for complex explanations or when you explicitly ask.
  2. Ask for explanations anytime — grammar rules, cultural nuance, or why a correction was made.
  3. Request difficulty adjustment if the conversation feels too easy or too hard.
  4. Set a session goal (e.g., "Today I want to practice past tense narration").

What This Skill Is Not

  • Not a certified language course. It supplements — not replaces — structured classes or certified tutoring.
  • Not a translation service. The focus is on producing language, not converting text.
  • Not a speech recognition tool. Pronunciation feedback is text-based (IPA, syllable stress, mouth position descriptions); it cannot hear your voice.
  • Not an exam guarantee. It can help you prepare, but it does not replace official test prep materials.

Safety & Boundaries

  • This skill is educational only. It does not provide immigration, legal, or professional certification advice.
  • Cultural advice given is general and may not apply to all regions where the target language is spoken.
  • If you need formal language certification or academic credit, consult accredited institutions.
Usage Guidance
This skill appears safe for ordinary language practice. Before using it, remember that your language goals, native language, and recurring mistakes may be used by the assistant to personalize feedback, so avoid sharing private details that are not needed for learning.
Capability Analysis
