Growth Tactics for Indie Hackers

When to Use

Use this skill when growing an indie project or bootstrapped SaaS product without a marketing budget.

Core Rules

1. Find 5 Watering Holes Where Your Users Congregate

Your target users are already gathered somewhere: a subreddit, a Slack community, a Discord server, an Indie Hackers group. Identify 5 communities where they spend time, become an active member for 2–4 weeks before mentioning your product, then share it with genuine context.

2. Build in Public for Compound Distribution

Sharing your weekly progress (MRR updates, lessons learned, technical challenges) attracts an audience that roots for your success and tries your product. Building in public on Twitter/X creates a warm audience before you have a marketing budget.

3. Do Things That Don't Scale First

Send personalized emails to 100 people who have the exact problem you solve. Cold DM potential users who mention the problem on social media. Post in niche communities yourself. These non-scalable tactics are the fastest path to your first 100 customers.

4. Create One Piece of Genuinely Useful Free Content

A free tool, template, dataset, or guide that solves one specific problem in your target market creates inbound leads, backlinks, and community mentions. The free offering surfaces people who have the problem your product solves.

5. Leverage Other People's Audiences

Guest post on newsletters that serve your target audience. Appear on podcasts for indie founders. Co-create content with tools that serve adjacent audiences. Other people's audiences are your cheapest distribution channel.

Quick Reference

Tactic Cost Speed Scale
Community posting Free Fast Low
Build in public Free Slow High
Cold outreach Free Fast Low
Free tool Low Medium High
Podcast appearances Free Slow Medium

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Spending on paid ads before finding organic distribution that works
  • Posting promotional content in communities without building reputation first
  • Trying 10 tactics at once instead of doing one well

Usage Guidance
This is an advisory, instruction-only skill that doesn't install code or request credentials — generally low risk. Before using it, be aware: (1) the skill mentions an external service (racoonn.me); if you later sign up or supply API keys/credentials to that or any outreach tools, review their privacy/security policies and restrict credentials to only what’s necessary; (2) if you want the agent to perform outreach (emails/DMs) or call third-party APIs, you'll need to provide credentials — prefer separate/test accounts and least-privilege keys; (3) the skill is promotional/advisory rather than automated: it won't itself exfiltrate data or run actions without you providing credentials or explicit follow-up instructions.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: growth-indie-hacker Version: 1.0.0 The skill bundle contains purely educational and advisory content regarding marketing strategies for indie hackers. It consists of a metadata file and a markdown file (SKILL.md) providing growth tactics, with no executable code, suspicious instructions, or indicators of malicious intent. A promotional link to racoonn.me is included for a waitlist, which is consistent with the stated purpose.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
Name and description match the SKILL.md content (growth tactics for indie projects). The skill is advisory in nature and does not request unrelated credentials, binaries, or system access.
Instruction Scope
Instructions stay within marketing/growth advice (community posting, building in public, cold outreach, free content). The SKILL.md includes a promotional reference to a third-party service (racoonn.me) and an 'API coming soon' note; the skill does not instruct the agent to call that API or transmit data, but the mention could prompt users to share data with an external provider later.
Install Mechanism
No install spec and no code files — lowest-risk configuration (instruction-only). Nothing will be downloaded or installed by the skill itself.
Credentials
The skill requests no environment variables or credentials, which is proportionate for advisory content. Be aware that some recommended actions (sending personalized emails or DMs, running third-party testing tools) would require credentials if the user later asks the agent to perform them — those are not requested by this skill.
Persistence & Privilege
always is false and defaults are unchanged. The skill does not request persistent or elevated privileges and does not modify other skills or system-wide settings.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
  2. Run the install command in chat: /install growth-indie-hacker
  3. After installation, invoke the skill by name or use /growth-indie-hacker
  4. Provide required inputs per the skill's parameter spec and get structured output
