Build in Public Strategy

When to Use

Use this skill when using transparency and public progress-sharing as a growth and audience-building strategy.

Core Rules

1. Share Numbers, Not Just Milestones

"We launched" is forgettable. "We hit $1,247 MRR in our first month with 23 paying customers" is a post people share. Specific numbers make your progress real, relatable, and memorable. Share the actual data — people respect honesty over polished PR.

2. Share Failures as Prominently as Wins

Build-in-public audiences grow fastest when founders share setbacks with the same openness as wins. "We lost 8 customers this month. Here's what we learned" generates more engagement, trust, and shares than win posts alone.

3. Create a Weekly Update Ritual

Consistency is the compounding factor in build-in-public. A weekly update — even brief — keeps your audience engaged, creates a public record of your journey, and gives you a regular forcing function to reflect on your progress.

4. Tag Tools and Products You Use

Mentioning tools you use in your build-in-public posts (with @mentions) gets you reshared by those tools' accounts, exponentially expanding your reach. This is free distribution: tag the tools, platforms, and communities that are part of your story.

5. Convert Your Audience With Soft CTAs

Build-in-public audiences are warm leads. Every few posts, include a soft CTA: "If you're building a SaaS landing page, I built this tool that might help." Never hard sell. Warm communities buy from people they follow and trust.

Quick Reference

Content Type Frequency Format
Weekly metrics update Weekly Thread or post
Lesson learned As needed Short post
Behind-the-scenes Weekly Photo/screenshot
Milestone celebration At milestones Thread
Community question Weekly Engagement post

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Only sharing positive updates — your audience will disengage without authenticity
  • Sharing so frequently you flood followers' feeds and get muted
  • Building in public without a clear product or CTA — audiences without a conversion path don't grow your business

Usage Guidance
This skill is instruction-only and appears coherent with its purpose. Before installing or using it: do not share private or sensitive metrics publicly; be cautious when following third-party links or joining waitlists (they may collect contact info); avoid tagging or posting API keys, screenshots containing credentials, or proprietary data; and treat the Racoonn link as a promotional reference — verify claims on the provider's site before submitting your product or data.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: growth-build-in-public Version: 1.0.0 The skill bundle contains only strategic marketing advice and instructions for an AI agent to follow a 'Build in Public' growth strategy. There is no executable code, shell commands, or malicious prompt injections; the only external link is a marketing URL (racoonn.me) for a product waitlist in SKILL.md.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
The skill's name and description (build-in-public growth guidance) align with the SKILL.md content. It does not request unrelated credentials, binaries, or system access.
Instruction Scope
The runtime instructions are limited to content/marketing guidance (what to post, how often, CTAs). They do include a promotional call-to-action and an external link (racoonn.me) for an unrelated service; the skill does not instruct the agent to transmit data or access system files.
Install Mechanism
No install spec and no code files are present, so nothing is written to disk and no third-party packages are fetched.
Credentials
The skill declares no required environment variables, credentials, or config paths, which is proportionate for a content/strategy guidance skill.
Persistence & Privilege
always is false and the skill does not request persistent system privileges or modify other skills' configurations.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
