README (SKILL.md)

Instagram Operations — Skill Manual

Built from Social Media Agent Master Playbook (March 2026)

Full Instagram playbook for organic growth in 2026. Reels are the growth engine — prioritize them above all else.

How the Instagram Algorithm Works (2026)

Multiple Algorithms

Instagram uses separate AI-driven ranking systems for:

  • Feed: Posts from followed accounts + recommended content
  • Stories: Prioritized by relationship strength and posting recency
  • Reels: Discovery-focused, content-quality driven
  • Explore: Interest-based discovery for non-followers

Feed Ranking Signals (by importance)

  1. User engagement history with your account
  2. Content performance (speed of engagement after posting)
  3. Relationship strength (how much the user interacts with your account)
  4. Content information (post type, timing, topic, hashtags/keywords)
  5. Poster information (account credibility, consistency, niche clarity)

New Metrics That Matter (2026 Shift)

Likes and comments are no longer primary signals. What now carries significantly more weight:

  • Saves: Signal long-term value. Content worth returning to.
  • Shares (Sends): Signal social relevance. Content worth sending to a friend.
  • Watch time / Completion rate: For Reels — above 75% = gold
  • Repeat views: People watching content more than once
  • Comment depth: Long comments and reply threads (5+ words = "high social relevance")
  • Profile visits from non-followers: Signal curiosity and trust

The Originality Score (New in 2026)

Instagram detects recycled clips. Reposting TikTok videos with watermarks or reusing trending content verbatim significantly tanks reach. Always create original content or add a unique spin.

Topic Clusters

The algorithm tries to understand what your account is about. Accounts that stay within a cohesive niche get placed into "topic clusters" and receive wider distribution within that community. Jumping across unrelated themes confuses the AI and limits distribution.

Content Formats Ranked

  1. Reels: 2.46% engagement rate. Non-negotiable for organic growth. Highest discovery potential.
  2. Carousels: Encourage swipes = time spent = engagement signal. Great for tutorials and storytelling.
  3. Stories: Critical for relationship building. 5-7/week minimum. Use interactive stickers.
  4. Static Posts: Lowest reach but valuable for brand identity and saves.

Reels Strategy (The Growth Engine)

Length

  • 60-90 seconds for storytelling
  • 15-30 seconds for viral potential
  • Don't artificially cut or pad content

Hook Structure

  • First 3 seconds: Must grab attention — text overlay, visual pattern interrupt, or bold statement
  • Last 10 seconds matter MORE than first 3: Completion rate is king. Build to a payoff.
  • Looping: End videos with a phrase or visual that mirrors the beginning. Drives rewatch signal.

Audio Strategy

  • 40% trending audio
  • 30% original voiceover
  • 20% original audio/music
  • 10% no audio (text-only)

Additional Rules

  • Always add captions — improves watch time dramatically
  • Post 3-5 Reels/week for optimal growth signals
  • Trial Reels: new feature shown only to non-followers — use for testing content with no downside risk

Carousel Strategy

  • 5-10 slides is the sweet spot
  • First slide = hook/curiosity (treat it like a headline)
  • Each slide delivers value AND creates curiosity for the next
  • Last slide = CTA (save, share, follow, link in bio)
  • Consistent design templates for brand recognition
  • Include text overlays — don't rely on caption alone

Stories Strategy

  • Post daily. Accounts with active Stories appear first in search.
  • Use interactive stickers (polls, questions, quizzes) — boost engagement signals
  • Share new posts as Story reposts for additional visibility
  • Behind-the-scenes content performs best
  • Use "Add Yours" sticker for viral potential
  • Regular Stories = fewer unfollows (confirmed by Mosseri)

Instagram SEO (Keywords > Hashtags in 2026)

Instagram now functions like a search engine. Keywords matter more than hashtags.

Where to Put Keywords

  • Username: Include primary keyword (e.g., "Web Design Expert")
  • Bio: Natural keyword inclusion for your niche
  • Captions: Write keyword-rich captions like short blog posts. First 125 characters are most important.
  • Alt text: Describe images with keywords — helps Instagram categorize content
  • Hashtags: Still useful but secondary. Use 5-15 relevant, specific hashtags (not generic).

The 30-Minute Engagement Window Protocol

Instagram tests your post with a small group immediately after posting. If retention and interaction are high, it expands distribution.

Full Protocol:

  1. Engage with followers for 15 minutes BEFORE posting (triggers relational signals)
  2. Post content
  3. Reply to every comment within the first 30 minutes
  4. Engage with niche content for 15 minutes AFTER posting
  5. Share the post to Stories immediately

Organic Growth System (7 Steps)

  1. Choose a tight niche and stick with it — topic cluster clarity drives algorithmic distribution
  2. Optimize your profile for search — keywords in name, bio, and alt text
  3. Post consistently across all formats — 3 Reels + 2 Carousels + 5 Stories weekly minimum
  4. Engage deeply with your niche community — like, comment, and share posts from related accounts
  5. Use Trial Reels — shown only to non-followers. Low risk for testing content.
  6. Collaborate — use the Collab feature to co-author posts with complementary accounts
  7. Track and iterate weekly — watch time %, saves per 1K views, shares per 1K views

Hook Formulas

Reel Hooks

  • Mistake: "Stop doing [common thing] — here's what to do instead"
  • Result: "This one change got me [specific result] in [timeframe]"
  • Secret: "[N] [topic] secrets that [authority figures] don't want you to know"
  • Story: "I was [relatable situation] until I discovered [thing]"
  • List: "[N] [things] you need to [do/stop doing] in [year]"
  • Tutorial: "Here's exactly how to [achieve desired outcome] step by step"
  • Comparison: "[Thing A] vs [Thing B] — which is actually better?"

Pattern Interrupts for Reels

  • Text overlay appearing within 0.5 seconds
  • Audio switch at the start
  • Camera movement (zoom, pan, jump cut)
  • "Wait for it" tension building
  • Starting mid-action or mid-sentence
  • Direct eye contact + bold statement

Caption Copywriting Rules

  • First 125 characters visible before "more" — make them count
  • Include keywords naturally (Instagram SEO)
  • End with a CTA (save, share, comment, link in bio)
  • Use a conversational tone
  • Storytelling > bullet points

Posting Cadence and Schedule

Weekly Minimum

  • 3 Reels
  • 2 Carousels
  • 5 Stories (daily)

Sweet Spot

  • 4-5 Reels/week
  • 2-3 Carousels/week
  • Stories: 5-7/day
  • Feed posts: 1-2/day

Best Posting Times (test for your audience)

  • Instagram engagement peaks typically: Tuesday-Friday, 9-11am and 2-4pm local time
  • Test your specific audience with Instagram Insights
  • Consistency at the same time matters more than the "perfect" time

Key Metrics to Track

Metric Target
Reel completion rate Above 75%
Saves per 1,000 views Over 3%
Shares per 1,000 views Above 2%
Follower Quality Ratio (Engagement/Followers) 5-10%
Profile visits from non-followers Track trend week over week

Track weekly, not daily, for true performance trends.

Account Warm-Up Protocol

Days 1-7

  • Complete 100% of profile information
  • Post to Feed AND Stories from Day 1
  • Engage heavily with niche accounts — signals your topic cluster
  • Don't use hashtags aggressively in Week 1
  • 0 promotional content

Week 2

  • Start Reels (even simple ones)
  • Increase posting frequency toward sweet spot
  • Continue 30-minute engagement window protocol
  • Begin building relationships with niche accounts

Month 1-2

  • Full posting cadence
  • 80/20 value:promo ratio
  • Begin all interactive Story features
  • Track and iterate weekly

What to Avoid

  • Reposting TikTok videos with watermarks
  • Jumping between unrelated topics (destroys topic cluster)
  • Ignoring the 30-minute engagement window
  • Using generic, high-volume hashtags
  • Inconsistent posting schedules
  • Artificial engagement or follow/unfollow tactics

How to Post (Publishing Workflow)

Instagram does not support a public API for publishing from third-party tools for personal accounts. For business/creator accounts, the Meta Content Publishing API is available. Use whichever method applies:

Option 1: Meta Content Publishing API (Business/Creator Accounts)

# Requires: Meta Business Account, Instagram Professional Account,
# access token with instagram_content_publish scope

# Step 1: Create a media container
POST https://graph.facebook.com/v19.0/{ig-user-id}/media
  ?image_url={url}
  &caption={caption text}
  &access_token={token}
# Returns: creation_id

# Step 2: Publish the container
POST https://graph.facebook.com/v19.0/{ig-user-id}/media_publish
  ?creation_id={id}
  &access_token={token}

Option 2: Scheduling Tools (Buffer, Later, Hootsuite)

If an integration with a scheduling tool is configured, use its API or webhook to schedule posts. Check skills/instagram/config.json for configured tool and credentials.

Option 3: Generate-Only Mode

If no publishing integration is configured, output the formatted content for the human to post manually:

  • Output the caption (copy-ready)
  • Output the image prompt or describe the visual needed
  • Output the hashtag block separately (paste as first comment for cleaner appearance)
  • Flag best posting time based on the account's peak engagement window

Default behavior: If no API credentials are configured, generate-only mode is assumed. Always ask: "Do you want me to post this, or should I generate the content for you to post?"

Caption Example (Full Breakdown)

Topic: Overcoming imposter syndrome as a small business owner

Hook (first 125 chars — shown before "more"):

Everyone told me my website looked "fine." I almost believed them. Here's what I found when I dug into the data:

Body:

Three months in, my bounce rate was 74%. Visitors were landing and leaving in under 8 seconds. "Fine" was quietly costing me clients every week.

The fix wasn't a redesign. It was one page — the homepage — and three specific changes: a clearer headline, a single call-to-action button, and a real photo instead of stock.

Bounce rate dropped to 41% in 30 days. Inquiries doubled.

What does your homepage say about you in the first 3 seconds?

CTA: Save this if you've been wondering why your site isn't generating leads.

Hashtag block (post as first comment):

#WebDesign #SmallBusinessOwner #LocalBusiness #WebsiteTips #DigitalMarketing #BusinessGrowth #WebDesigner #SmallBizTips

Commands / Triggers

  • "Create an Instagram post about [topic]" → Generate caption, visual description, hashtags
  • "Make a Reel script about [topic]" → Hook, body, CTA script optimized for 60-90 seconds
  • "Write a carousel about [topic]" → Slide-by-slide outline with copy for each slide
  • "Post to Instagram" → Publish via configured API or output generate-only package
  • "Create this week's Instagram content" → Generate 3 Reels + 2 Carousels + 5 Story ideas
  • "What should I post today?" → Pull from content pillars and generate day-appropriate post
  • "Check my Instagram metrics" → Pull via API if configured, or guide to Insights manually
  • "Write Stories for today" → Generate 3-5 Story frames with interactive sticker suggestions
Usage Guidance
This skill is an instruction-only Instagram strategy guide and does not request credentials or install code, so technical risk from installation is low. Before using the recommendations, consider: (1) verify claims that reference platform features (e.g., 'Trial Reels') against Instagram's official docs—algorithms change frequently; (2) avoid automating the recommended engagement protocols with bots or services that violate Instagram's Terms of Service; (3) be cautious about any subsequent tooling you use to implement these tactics (scheduling/automation services may request credentials); and (4) if you need stronger assurances, ask the publisher for a source or references for metrics cited here.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: instagram-agent Version: 1.0.0 The skill bundle is a comprehensive manual for an AI agent to manage Instagram operations, including content strategy, SEO, and posting workflows. It contains no executable code, malicious instructions, or data exfiltration attempts, focusing entirely on legitimate social media management tasks and standard API interactions (SKILL.md).
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
The skill is a content/operations playbook for Instagram growth. It contains only guidance and strategy and does not request binaries, environment variables, or external services that would be unrelated to that purpose.
Instruction Scope
SKILL.md contains tactical posting, caption, and engagement guidance only. It does not instruct the agent to read files, access environment variables, call external endpoints, or perform system operations. Note: some behavioral recommendations (e.g., aggressively engaging around posts) could be risky if later automated by another tool — the document itself does not automate anything.
Install Mechanism
No install spec or code files are present; this is instruction-only, so nothing will be written to disk or downloaded during installation.
Credentials
No environment variables, credentials, or config paths are required or referenced in the SKILL.md, which is proportionate for a strategy/playbook skill.
Persistence & Privilege
The skill does not request always:true or other elevated persistence, nor does it indicate modifying other skills or system-wide settings.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
