How to Add a Logo to Your QR Code

Why Add a Logo to a QR Code

A logo-embedded QR code looks more professional and builds brand trust. When users see a familiar brand mark, they are more willing to scan without hesitation. Branded QR codes also integrate better with the overall visual identity on marketing materials.

Error Correction: Why You Can Cover Part of the Pattern

QR codes have built-in Reed-Solomon error correction. At the highest level H, up to 30% of the code area can be damaged or obscured and the code still decodes correctly. Embedding a logo is essentially "intentional damage" to the center region. As long as the logo covers no more than about 25โ€“30% of the code, scanners can recover the full data from redundant modules. This is why logo QR codes must use level H error correction.

Logo Size Limits

The logo area should not exceed 30% of the total QR code area. Above this threshold, scan failure risk rises sharply even at the highest error correction level. In practice, most professional tools limit logos to 20โ€“25% of the QR code size to maintain a reliable margin. When testing, verify scan success on at least five different smartphones.

Use PNG (with transparent background) or SVG for logo files. A transparent-background logo embeds best because it does not unnecessarily cover the surrounding code area. If the logo colors blend with the QR code, add a white rounded-rectangle background behind the logo to improve visual clarity and reduce effective coverage area.

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Select "High" (H) error correction level in the generator
  2. Generate the base QR code and download SVG or high-resolution PNG
  3. Open the QR code file in design software (Illustrator, Figma, etc.)
  4. Place the logo centered over the QR code and scale to appropriate size
  5. Scan-test with a smartphone to confirm successful decoding on multiple devices

Color Selection and Contrast

There must be sufficient contrast between the QR code's dark modules and the light background โ€” recommended ratio of at least 3:1, ideally 4.5:1 or more. Never use light modules on a light background or dark modules on a dark background. To match brand colors, you can change the dark module color (keeping it a sufficiently dark brand shade), but the background must remain light or white.
