Description
Research purchases, compare prices, detect scams, and negotiate better deals.
README (SKILL.md)

Triggers

Activate on: "should I buy", "is this worth it", "is this a good deal", "help me find", "compare prices", "negotiate", price research requests.

Before acting: Clarify budget (hard limit vs flexible), timeline (urgent vs can wait), quality tolerance.

Core Flow

  1. Identify — What are they buying? (product, service, B2B software)
  2. Research — Check sources per category (see sources.md)
  3. Evaluate — Price vs market, red flags, timing
  4. Recommend — Buy / wait / walk + reasoning
  5. Support — Negotiation scripts if needed

Quick Deal Check

When asked "is this a good deal?":

  • Compare to recent sold prices (not listings)
  • Check 3-month price trend — dropping = wait, stable = buy
  • Scan for red flags below

Red flags that kill deals:

  • Price far below market → scam
  • Seller avoids written communication
  • Payment via wire/crypto/gift cards only
  • "Sale" price is actually above 6-month average

Decision Framework

Question No =
Do I need this (not just want)? Wait 30 days
Have I researched alternatives? Research first
Is price at/below market? Negotiate
Do I have a walk-away price? Set one now

All yes → Buy.

Negotiation Basics

Retail/services:

"I found this for $X at [competitor]. Can you match?"

Used goods:

"Similar items sold for $X. Would you take that?"

Bills (internet, insurance):

"I've been a customer X years. What can you do to keep me?"

For advanced tactics and category-specific scripts, see tactics.md.

Category Guidance

Different categories need different approaches — pricing data, negotiation norms, and red flags vary significantly. See categories.md for:

  • Electronics & tech
  • Vehicles
  • Real estate
  • Services (contractors, professionals)
  • B2B / SaaS
  • Subscriptions

Subscription Audit

When asked to review subscriptions:

  1. List all with cost + last use date
  2. Flag: unused (60+ days), overpriced, redundant
  3. Provide cancellation talking points
  4. Calculate total savings
Usage Guidance
This skill appears coherent and low-risk: it only provides research steps and negotiation scripts and asks for no credentials or installs. Before using, understand how it will get any personal data it needs (e.g., your subscription list) — you should manually provide that rather than granting account access. Be cautious if you ask the agent to contact sellers or execute transactions: verify any messages before sending and never share payment credentials. If you plan to use paid services the guidance references (Carfax, Keepa, etc.), expect separate sign-ins and fees outside the skill.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: buy Version: 1.0.0 The skill bundle is designed to assist users with purchase research, price comparison, scam detection, and negotiation. All instructions within `SKILL.md`, `categories.md`, `sources.md`, and `tactics.md` are consistently aligned with this stated purpose. The agent is instructed to use legitimate, publicly available tools and sources for information gathering and to provide advice. There is no evidence of intentional harmful behavior, data exfiltration, unauthorized execution, persistence, or prompt injection attempts designed to subvert the agent's core function or access sensitive data beyond the scope of its stated purpose.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
Name/description (price research, scam detection, negotiation) lines up with the SKILL.md and supporting files. All suggested data sources and tactics are relevant to buying decisions.
Instruction Scope
Instructions stay focused on web research and negotiation scripts. One minor ambiguity: the 'Subscription Audit' step assumes a list of subscriptions (cost/last use) but does not specify how the agent obtains that — this likely requires the user to provide the data or explicit account access, which the skill does not request. No instructions read local files, environment variables, or secret stores.
Install Mechanism
Instruction-only skill with no install spec and no code files; nothing will be written to disk or downloaded by the skill itself.
Credentials
No environment variables, credentials, or config paths are requested. All recommended external services (e.g., Carfax, eBay sold listings, Keepa) are reasonable for the stated tasks and would typically require separate accounts if the user chooses to use them.
Persistence & Privilege
Skill is not marked always:true and does not request persistent system privileges. It does not modify other skills or system configurations.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
  2. Run the install command in chat: /install buy
  3. After installation, invoke the skill by name or use /buy
  4. Provide required inputs per the skill's parameter spec and get structured output
