README (SKILL.md)

Auto-Updater Skill

Keep your Clawdbot and skills up to date automatically with daily update checks.

What It Does

This skill sets up a daily cron job that:

  1. Updates Clawdbot itself (via clawdbot doctor or package manager)
  2. Updates all installed skills (via clawdhub update --all)
  3. Messages you with a summary of what was updated

Setup

Quick Start

Ask Clawdbot to set up the auto-updater:

Set up daily auto-updates for yourself and all your skills.

Or manually add the cron job:

clawdbot cron add \
  --name "Daily Auto-Update" \
  --cron "0 4 * * *" \
  --tz "America/Los_Angeles" \
  --session isolated \
  --wake now \
  --deliver \
  --message "Run daily auto-updates: check for Clawdbot updates and update all skills. Report what was updated."

Configuration Options

Option Default Description
Time 4:00 AM When to run updates (use --cron to change)
Timezone System default Set with --tz
Delivery Main session Where to send the update summary

How Updates Work

Clawdbot Updates

For npm/pnpm/bun installs:

npm update -g clawdbot@latest
# or: pnpm update -g clawdbot@latest
# or: bun update -g clawdbot@latest

For source installs (git checkout):

clawdbot update

Always run clawdbot doctor after updating to apply migrations.

Skill Updates

clawdhub update --all

This checks all installed skills against the registry and updates any with new versions available.

Update Summary Format

After updates complete, you'll receive a message like:

🔄 Daily Auto-Update Complete

**Clawdbot**: Updated to v2026.1.10 (was v2026.1.9)

**Skills Updated (3)**:
- prd: 2.0.3 → 2.0.4
- browser: 1.2.0 → 1.2.1
- nano-banana-pro: 3.1.0 → 3.1.2

**Skills Already Current (5)**:
gemini, sag, things-mac, himalaya, peekaboo

No issues encountered.

Manual Commands

Check for updates without applying:

clawdhub update --all --dry-run

View current skill versions:

clawdhub list

Check Clawdbot version:

clawdbot --version

Troubleshooting

Updates Not Running

  1. Verify cron is enabled: check cron.enabled in config
  2. Confirm Gateway is running continuously
  3. Check cron job exists: clawdbot cron list

Update Failures

If an update fails, the summary will include the error. Common fixes:

  • Permission errors: Ensure the Gateway user can write to skill directories
  • Network errors: Check internet connectivity
  • Package conflicts: Run clawdbot doctor to diagnose

Disabling Auto-Updates

Remove the cron job:

clawdbot cron remove "Daily Auto-Update"

Or disable temporarily in config:

{
  "cron": {
    "enabled": false
  }
}

Usage Guidance
This skill looks coherent for automatically updating Clawdbot and installed skills, but automatic updaters inherently modify installed code and pull updates from package registries. Before enabling: 1) run clawdhub update --all --dry-run to preview changes; 2) inspect the generated script (~/.clawdbot/scripts/auto-update.sh) and the cron entry (clawdbot cron list) before enabling; 3) check the first run's log at ~/.clawdbot/logs/auto-update.log and the echoed summary; 4) ensure you trust the ClawdHub/registry sources and have backups or a rollback plan (or prefer manual approval); 5) be aware updates may require elevated permissions (sudo) or change system state — prefer running updates in an isolated session as recommended. If you want stronger safeguards, require manual review before applying updates or limit the updater to dry-run reporting only.
Capability Analysis
Type: OpenClaw Skill Name: auto-updater-local Version: 1.0.0 The auto-updater-local skill is a legitimate utility designed to automate updates for the Clawdbot core and its installed skills. It uses standard system package managers (npm, pnpm, bun) and internal CLI tools (clawdbot, clawdhub) to perform updates and schedules them via the platform's built-in cron functionality. The implementation details in SKILL.md and references/agent-guide.md are transparent, follow the stated purpose, and do not contain any evidence of data exfiltration, malicious execution, or unauthorized persistence.
Capability Assessment
Purpose & Capability
Name/description (daily updater for Clawdbot and skills) match the instructions: the SKILL.md and references describe creating a cron job, running clawdbot/clawdhub update commands, and reporting results. The required actions (running package manager updates, running clawdbot commands, invoking clawdhub) are expected for this purpose.
Instruction Scope
Instructions run local commands, create a helper script under ~/.clawdbot/scripts/auto-update.sh, write logs to ~/.clawdbot/logs/auto-update.log, and echo a parseable summary block for the agent. These behaviors are within scope for an updater, but they do give the skill the ability to change installed software and capture command output (which could include sensitive text if some tool prints it). The SKILL.md does not attempt to read unrelated system secrets or external unexpected endpoints.
Install Mechanism
This is an instruction-only skill with no install spec and no downloads. No archives, third-party registries, or remote URLs are pulled by the skill itself — updates occur via the platform's existing package managers and ClawdHub, which is consistent with an updater. Low install-surface risk from the skill bundle itself.
Credentials
The skill declares no required environment variables or credentials and the instructions don't request unrelated secrets. It uses standard environment context such as $HOME for logs and relies on installed tools (npm/pnpm/bun/clawdbot/clawdhub), which is proportionate for updating software.
Persistence & Privilege
The skill suggests adding a cron job (via clawdbot cron add) so it will run autonomously on schedule; always:false (not force-enabled). Autonomous scheduling is expected for an updater, but it grants ongoing ability to modify installed code on a schedule — a real operational privilege that users should accept consciously.
How to Use
  1. Make sure OpenClaw is installed (local or Docker)
  2. Run the install command in chat: /install auto-updater-local
  3. After installation, invoke the skill by name or use /auto-updater-local
  4. Provide required inputs per the skill's parameter spec and get structured output
